after several years of retirement , literary work, jomini resumed post in russian army, , in 1823, made full general. until retirement in 1829 principally employed in military education of tsarevich nicholas (afterwards emperor) , in organization of russian staff college, established in 1832 , bore original name of nicholas academy october revolution of 1917. in 1828 employed in field in russo-turkish war, , @ siege of varna awarded grand cordon of alexander order.


that last active service. in 1829, settled in brussels, served main place of residence next thirty years. in 1853, after trying without success bring political understanding between france , russia, jomini called st petersburg act military adviser tsar during crimean war. returned brussels upon conclusion of peace in 1856. later, settled @ passy near paris. busily employed end of life in writing treatises, pamphlets , open letters on subjects of military art , history. in 1859, asked napoleon iii furnish plan of campaign italian war. 1 of last essays dealt austro-prussian war of 1866 , influence of breech-loading rifle. died @ passy year before franco-prussian war of 1870–71.
