barry mill


at far west end of town village of barry. on north side of road runs through village, west of barry burn kirkyard , ruins of old parish church. immediate east of this, road heads north towards old a92. half kilometre road, on left hand side medieval motte associated grange of barry, monks of balmerino abbey managed parish 13th century. on other side of road, driveway runs towards old upper mill, known barry mill , water powered corn mill dating 1815, when built on site of older mill dating 16th century. it, along nearby bridge part of old road barry grange panbride, both category b listed buildings.


much of western part of carnoustie post-war. main road in part of town known barry road , towards eastern end there group of weavers cottages pre-date expansion of town , used belong hamlet of hunterstown. leading south here, panmure street, leads panmure institute and, behind it, panmure works. panmure institute known panmure centre , owned angus council community learning , development centre. factory building restored in late 1990s , houses building firm dj laing. @ end of barry road, road diverts north @ corner hotel, before continuing eastwards along dundee street. corner, used known hutton s corner, rocky outcrop blocked path of plough when road marked out in 18th century.


the road heading north on opposite side of dundee street west path . name comes fact path lead down main road western boundary of grounds of carnoustie house. carnoustie house built major william philips in 1792 , bought george kinloch in 1808. passed kinloch s daughter, cecilia kinloch who, in turn, passed niece, helen lingard-guthrie. house , lands bought council in first half of 20th century , house demolished following fire around 40 years ago. carnoustie house grounds used park , annual town gala held. part of land occupied woodlands primary school, woodlands caravan park , town recycling centre.

continuing eastwards along dundee street foot of west path, on north side of road small former st annes roman catholic church. on south side of road, large grounds of kinloch primary school, opened in 1878 carnoustie public school , last used school in november 2008 during renovations of carlogie primary school. buildings demolished in 2010 make way affordable housing.


opposite main part of school former erskine free church, has been through number of hands since sold off in 20th century , houses stars sports bar, , beyond school, heading south towards beach links avenue. on left hand side of links avenue can found scout hut which, despite appearances, oldest school building in carnoustie. street passes through narrow tunnel under railway line links parade near carnoustie hotel, built in anticipation of 1999 open championship. hotel houses 2.8 metre clock, weighing 450 kg, largest timepiece supplied rolex @ time fitted. there 40 golf courses worldwide have been given these rolex clocks. beyond hotel lie 3 golf courses of carnoustie golf links.


past links avenue on north side of dundee street carnoustie church, never received steeple and, little further past that, auld nick housed carnoustie s police station. war memorial lies adjacent auld nick , dedicated in 1926. features sculpture of unknown soldier thomas beattie.


on opposite side of road auld nick ferrier street , little way down on right hand side can seen thomas lowson s dibble tree. opposite dibble tree kinloch street and, 110 yards down street on north side, erskine united free church, oldest church building in carnoustie, built in 1810.

a short way past war memorial on southern side of dundee street first feu cottage, thomas lowson s original home in carnoustie, , beyond traditional centre of town, cross, marking intersection between dundee street, high street, queens street , park avenue. meeting high street on north side, lochty street leads church of holyrood in maule street. category b listed building, listed building within town, , built on land donated helen lingard-guthrie, had married 1 of clergymen ministered nascent episcopalian congregation during summer missions, rev. roger lingard.


at easternmost end of high street, main road becomes church street, station road heading south towards main railway station , adjacent station hotel, built in 1840. opposite station road old city of glasgow bank building built in 1870 in italianate style architecture used house clydesdale bank. being developed private accommodation. church street continues eastwards , @ 1 time lead way newton of panbride church in former village of gallowlaw. junction carlogie road realigned years ago , part of church street east of carlogie road renamed arbroath road. past church, on south side of road, road bridge leads former fishing village of west haven, pre-dates carnoustie several centuries. east of town, in panbride, panbride parish kirk. building category c(s) listed, although burial aisle , nearby parish school both category b listed loupin on stane series of steps in church courtyard allowed churchgoers mount horses in dignified manner have category b listing, bridge on craigmill burn @ bottom of hill. @ southern end of craigmill den, panbride house has category b listing, associated stables.
