on 27 december 2010, minister environment , forests, jairam ramesh, during visit madras crocodile bank, announced formation of national tri-state chambal sanctuary management , coordination committee gharial conservation on 1,600 km (620 sq mi) of national chambal sanctuary. committee members comprise representatives of 3 states water resources ministries, states departments of irrigation , power, wildlife institute of india, madras crocodile bank, gharial conservation alliance, development alternatives, ashoka trust research in ecology , environment, worldwide fund nature , divisional forest officers of 3 states. committee plan strategies protection of gharials , habitat. conduct further research on species , ecology , evaluate related socio-economic elements of dependent riparian communities. funding new initiative mobilized sub-scheme of ‘integrated development of wildlife habitats’ in amount of rs. 50 80 million (usd 1 million 1.7 million) each year 5 years. project has long been advocated herpetologist rom whitaker.
