competition format
each side represented 6 teams – team north america, 4 (two of each gender) determined canadian curling association based on recent participation @ either canada cup of curling, world curling championship, or olympic winter games. other 2 north american teams determined united states curling association. world curling federation determines 6 rinks representing team world event, team europe selected.
there 4 main competitions event, , either side claim continental cup, minimum majority of points must attained these competitions. prior 2013, minimum majority of points 201 points, in new points system implemented in 2013, minimum majority of points 30½ points.
mixed doubles
one of first events mixed doubles event, eight-end game 2 rocks in play @ start of each end (one each team).
prior 2007, each team consisted of 2 sweepers , 2 throwers, 1 man , 1 woman play each position. tradition, each men s rink paired women s rink make 2 teams event, each mixed team being given names of 2 throwers. 24 players on each side required play in either sweeping or throwing role in format. starting in 2007, however, sweepers eliminated create true doubles game, , sweeping done either thrower or skip.
according current rules of mixed doubles curling, 2 rocks, 1 each team, put in play @ start of each end. 1 rock placed inside house , other rock guard. 5 rocks played per team, scoring tallied in team curling. 1 thrower must throw first , last stones of each end, while other thrower must throw 3 stones in between. assignment of stones throw player may freely changed between ends, , determined throws first stone. each team given 48 minutes on game clock, , (as extension of free-guard zone rule) stones may not removed play until third stone in each end thrown (effectively creating five-rock rule ).

in continental cup, there 6 mixed doubles matches, 1 point given win in each match (or half point both teams in event of tie after 6 ends). in past, 6 points have been given win, , 3 points have been given tie. mixed doubles games played during same days of competition team games, making afternoon draw. determine mixed doubles matchups, 1 captain name team while other captain responds team oppose them. right name second alternates between 2 captains through 6 matchups.

singles
the singles competition akin skills competitions found in ice hockey. there 6 singles matches (three women s , 3 men s), 1 point given winner of each match. in past, 4 points given winner of each match, , 8 bonus points awarded team higher aggregate score singles events. convention, each of matches pit teams against each other. prior 2007, 1 team member throw 6 shots, while non-throwers must sweep or skip thrower. beginning in 2007, however, each member of team must make @ least 1 shot, , no member may make more 2 shots. singles event discontinued in 2016.
each singles match determined based on points system (with 0 missing shot entirely, 1 if shot remains in play outside house, , higher points based on shooter lands, maximum of 5 points if shooter reaches button), , team higher score wins game. 3 of shots must in-turns, while other 3 must out-turns, shots set according chosen type of turn. 6 shots follows:
the runthrough — shooter must hit own center guard, must hit opposing rock @ of button. position of hit guard determines point value of shot.
the draw button - simple draw button.
the draw through port - shooter must draw rock between 2 opposing rocks (a corner guard , center guard on opposite side of center line). points awarded if thrown rock passes through 2 opposing rocks without hitting either rock.
the raise - shooter must hit own centre guard guard raised house. position of raised guard determines point value of shot.
the hit-and-roll - shooter must hit opposing stone on corner guard outside house , roll towards center of house. hit stone must removed play in order score points.
the double takeout - shooter must remove 2 opposing stones, 1 @ top of four-foot , 1 @ of button. both stones must removed play in order score points. position of shooter determines point value of shot.
to determine singles matchups, 1 team captain must choose 1 rink while other captain chooses rink opposing them. 1 captain choose first first women s matchup , second men s matchup, while other captain chooses first first men s matchup , second women s matchup. women s games completed before men s games, , shots of 1 type must completed before next shot done. team throwing first in 1 shot (which same team in 3 matches) throw second in next shot. right make first shot in runthrough alternates between 2 teams every year.

teams
the team games portion of continental cup highlighted 18 eight-end curling games, 1 point awarded winner of each game (a half point each team if game remains tied through 8 ends). prior 2013, there 12 team curling games, 6 points awarded winner of each game. in team portion, each team captain name rink play on each of 3 sheets of ice, other captain being able choose of rinks play against them. team games played on 2 or 3 days of competition, women s team matches make morning or afternoon draw , men s matches make evening draw. team captain did not select first on first day select first on second day.

the final event, , event worth amount of points, skins portion. 30 points can claimed in event, meaning neither team can clinch continental cup until skins games played. there total of 5 points, half-point skins in first 6 ends of game , one-point skins in final 2 ends. prior 2013, teams claim 260 points in skins games, , points distributed in uneven manner through each of 8 ends, resulting in different total point value each skins game.
in order team claim skin, team must either score @ least 2 points hammer or force steal without hammer. in skins competitions, blank ends turn hammer on opposing team. if after 8 ends there remain points claimed, draw button determines team points.

from 2002 2007, there 6 skins games, 3 men s , 3 women s, games worth 30, 40, , 60 points. games typically referred , b , , c games. 2007 2012, 8 skins games played. 3 worth 20 points, 3 worth 30 points , remaining 2 worth 55 points. 3 men s skins games , 3 women s skins games played, remaining , b game featuring mixed teams. teams playing in featured games, known c games, required contribute 2 players, 1 male , 1 female, both mixed skins games, while teams playing in skins game must contribute 2 players, 1 male , 1 female, b mixed skins game, , vice versa.
as team portion of event, 1 captain name rink each game, opposing captain naming rink oppose them. draw button determines team have hammer in first end. matchups not determined until second day of competition.
the featured skins game played on last day of competition, while others played on same day singles events. exception of men s feature game in 2003 cup, played 7 ends 13 points on line in eighth, skins games played conclusion, if continental cup has been clinched 1 side partway through, or before matches have been played (as case in 2007, when north america had clinched continental cup before either of feature skins game played).
