early years

the future in publication since first day of class held @ orlando campus in 1968. name of future derived original name of university of central florida, florida technological university (future). words central florida added after school changed name university of central florida in 1978. future held offices in ucf library many other organizations did in years of university s history.

when university first opened, students had no choice mascot. citronaut unofficial mascot ftu s first year, appearing on official publications, cover of 1968–69 student handbook. after year, students petitioned student government new mascot. in response, future published staffers felt important criteria new mascot: animal flew, school motto reach stars , should virtuous, include school colors of black , gold, , should unique because ftu stressed importance of individuality. shortly thereafter student health center nurse, judy hines, followed criteria , came vincent vulture. mascot stuck year before school administration , students decided on new official mascot, knights of pegasus.

independence

in 1993, future made independent of ucf being spun off independent company, knight newspapers, inc. @ time, company held ownership of seminole chronicle. in february 2007, florida today purchased knight newspapers, inc. included central florida future. florida today owned gannett, made future second student-run university paper purchased gannett, first being fsview & florida flambeau of florida state university.

subsequent sale, offices moved central florida research park, located directly south of ucf s main campus. after purchasing future, gannett moved 3 other products within same office future, including seminole chronicle, weekly newspaper covering seminole county, moms me, monthly magazine mothers, , saves, coupon booklet packaged future.

recent history

in 2016, future moved headquarters office building @ intersection of university boulevard , rouse road, mile ucf.
