the south tyrolean winegrowing zone divided 7 pdo sub-regions:

“alto adige oltradige”, located west of eisack adige, , north of kalterer see near terlan;
“alto adige valle isarco”, between vahrn , völs schlern;
“alto adige colli di bolzano doc” south west of bozen;
“alto adige santa maddalena doc” north west of previous one.
among these zones , beyond, there regions, produce wines called “alto adige/südtirol doc”. protected designations of origin rule labelling of south tyrolean wines, according origin , guarantee consumers, resellers , sommelier source of wine.
approximately 5,000 wine producers deliver grapes 160 wineries, produce great variety of wine, red , sparkling wines, despite of small dimensions. 70% of south tyrolean wine produced in wineries run social cooperatives, remaining 25% comes association “alto adige estate wineries”, , remaining 5% produced “alto adige independent winegrowers”.
