biography
early life , hockey career

mcsorley born in hamilton, ontario, grew near cayuga, haldimand county, ontario. made nhl debut in october 1983 pittsburgh penguins, rose fame after trade in september 1985 brought him edmonton oilers. arrival , physical presence made edmonton s incumbent enforcer dave semenko expendable, , mcsorley inherited title of wayne gretzky s bodyguard .

this title follow him los angeles in 1988, when both , gretzky, along mike krushelnyski, obtained kings. kings, mcsorley s bruising style made him fan favorite; strove improve game beyond being known enforcer, earning great respect around league hard work ethic, fine team play, , articulate intelligence off ice.

in 1992–93 nhl regular season, mcsorley led defensemen in shorthanded goals three.

in game between bruins , canucks in vancouver on february 21, 2000, mcsorley swung stick , hit donald brashear in head 4.6 seconds left in game. brashear fell backwards , hit head hard on ice, losing consciousness , suffering grade iii concussion. mcsorley charged assault , suspended nhl remainder of 1999–2000 season (including playoffs) missing 23 games. on october 6, 2000, judge william kitchen of provincial court of british columbia found him guilty of assault weapon attack on brashear. sentenced 18 months probation. trial first on-ice attack nhl player since dino ciccarelli s 1988 trial.

after assault conviction, nhl suspension extended 1 full year through february 21, 2001. mcsorley never play in nhl game.

united kingdom

during suspension, attempted continue playing hockey in united kingdom london knights, elder brother chris coaching, move blocked international ice hockey federation, in deference nhl suspension. similar intention play in germany munich barons failed, played grand rapids griffins in final ihl season, dressing 14 games.

in autumn of 2001, following completion of suspension, mcsorley again looked towards other side of atlantic. considered purchasing struggling cardiff devils team brother, in order pursue new player-coach role , develop interest in sport in uk.

mcsorley appeared guest player both great britain , cardiff devils during series of games in november 2001, business deal failed materialise.
