after driving site on saturday after arrive, hsr s trained staff run variety of instructional programs during week starting driving hub area basic canoe lessons on sunday group started daily transportation. programs throughout week include:
sailing lessons
kayak lessons
riflery .22 calibre rifles on 18.288 m (20.000 yd) range.
archery
trapper s cabin - scouts visit reconstructed cabin fur trapping era , learn trapping , logging, both of practised on land hsr.
survival island — scouts learn building shelters, purifying water, , how become found if 1 lost in woods.
rappelling- scouts chance rappel down 50-foot rock face deep in haliburton wilderness.
climbing wall
low ropes course - obstacle course including tight rope walks, slate bridges, etc.
snorkel island — scouts don mask, snorkel, , fins , search treasures in water near island.
mountain biking - scout troops taken three-hour ride 1 of few different locations
star hike — troops barged middle of kennabi lake @ stars , hear stories constellations under dark, milky way lit sky full city-less view of milky way streak. must see youth urban environments.
badge trading — scouts gather @ hub on tuesday evening approximately 6:30 8:30 trade , show badges. present youth , leaders of ages trading badges large collections. must see in camp many attendees have large badge collections present many decades of patches represented.
hsr regatta
thursday afternoon famous hsr regatta. troops gather @ hub compete in variety of friendly water-based activities. events include:
war canoe race — race in there ten scouts in each war canoe. (this race uses 2 of 3 ten person war canoes owned reserve)
pfd swim — swimming while wearing pfd (personal flotation device)
match swim — contestants must swim 1 dock carrying match. winner first light match. matches carried in mouth keep them dry.
medly swim — 4 scouts swim in relay, each using different stroke (back stroke, breast stroke, side stroke, , free style).
head-up front crawl race - venturers swim 2 laps of head-up front crawl
in , out canoe race — scouts race canoes. when whistle blown, scouts must jump out climb in before continuing.
canoe sculling race — scouts race 3 canoe without paddles using hands propulsion.
canoe-over-canoe race — 4 scouts 2 canoes each site race. when whistle blown, 1 canoe must swamp , rescued other using canoe-over-canoe rescue, , both canoes must race shore.
kayak race - venturers compete in individual kayak race.
solo canoe race - venturers compete in individual canoe soloing race.
although points kept during event, rewards restricted friendly bragging rights , take-home home trophy. although bragging rights seem more enough instill friendly competition between troops. must-see attendee.
camp-wide fire
on friday evening, staff host camp-wide campfire @ smokey hollow, located east of hub down camp road. each group prepares song or skit perform @ campfire final send-off week long camp before departing on saturday. @ same time arriving fire in canoes @ waterfront in front of hub, campers can sign in song or skit along canoes , drove site night on pontoon boats before being drove out on same boats following morning. done save time following morning having canoes brought on night of campfire. due morning next day, groups called campfire leave in numerical order required remain longer based on departure time next morning.

scouts have access assigned canoes week , rowboats present @ site while kayaks, , sailboats available request of staff member after have had respective lesson in craft. kennabi lake offers excellent fishing. important note license required fish within canadian inland waters wish so, international or domestic in origin. these can acquired online prior arrival or @ numerous outdoor shops throughout ontario. wishing venture off on own explore there many day trips available including visiting logging museum within algonquin provincial park, seeing undomesticated wolves @ haliburton forest & wildlife reserve, or climbing dorset county scenic lookout tower in town of haliburton.
hiking
hsr has extensive network of marked hiking trails , outpost campsites, ideal overnight hikes throughout approximately 5000 acres of camp property. hiking trails wind way through forests , on rock formations typical of canadian shield. 1 can see wildlife, such deer on these hikes. popular hiking destinations include high falls, 1 can have shower under waterfall; pike s peak, must-see, being highest point on camp property offering fantastic view of rolling highlands; , hurst lake, there large shelter , supply of canoes. campers encouraged plan out excursions in great detail experienced staff due large amount of unused , overgrown trails not present on camp maps due natural rehabilitation , reduce risk of lost campers on such large fence-less property.
