the lyttelton times devised canterbury association part of planned settlement of canterbury. after arrival in mid december 1850, first edition of newspaper published on 11 january 1851. initial location in port town, lyttelton, newspaper moved headquarters larger market of christchurch in 1863. main competitor, press, had established in christchurch in 1861.
