originally colac, victoria, simpkin first rookie listed sydney swans 16th selection in 2006 afl rookie draft after playing junior football geelong falcons in tac cup. simpkin spend 2006 , 2007 season playing sydney swans reserves team won 2006 , 2007 afl canberra premierships. despite being elevated senior list 2007 season, delisted swans @ end of 2007 season without having played in afl. trained period late in 2007 melbourne not drafted squad.

he returned play colac tigers in geelong football league. during 2008 managed play 8 games geelong in victorian football league (vfl) on permits. in 2009, full-time member of geelong (vfl) squad , in 2010 represented vfl against wafl. in december 2010 in 2011 rookie draft selected geelong. continued play geelong in vfl , despite performing consistently throughout season, winning team s best , fairest award, unable break afl side.


prior round 9 of 2012 afl season, simpkin promoted off rookie list replacement nathan vardy. made debut against western bulldogs, coming on substitute player @ three-quarter time. simpkin again won geelong (vfl) best , fairest award in 2012 , part of winning geelong (vfl) premiership side same year. geelong had reduce number of rookies 6 4 because of new afl rules, decided not re-new contract , became eligible on afl delisted free agency list.


hawthorn

hawthorn secured former geelong rookie jonathan simpkin during 2012 afl delisted free agency period.


he played first game hawthorn against adelaide in adelaide, south australia, in round 6 2013.


he managed thirteen games hawthorn in initial year before being squeezed out @ end of regular season. played in winning box hill premiership team in vfl , won norm goss memorial medal best on ground performance in vfl grand final. injury in brendan whitecross got selected 2013 afl grand final against fremantle, , subbed on @ 3 quarter time play in first afl premiership.


simpkin played 1 afl game hawthorn in 2015 (a round 7 win on melbourne) , delisted in october.


essendon

in january 2016, simpkin signed essendon football club top-up player due supplements controversy.
