in mid-july 2017, reporters in washington, d.c. observed increased security presence surrounding rubio. month later on august 13, 2017, miami herald reported diosdado cabello, high-ranking venezuelan official, had initiated assassination plot targeting rubio, allegedly contacting mexican nationals discuss killing rubio. rubio, critic of venezuelan government, has led effort in united states government take action against corrupt officials of latin american government, singling out cabello. department of homeland security not verify of details involved in threat, though plan serious enough multiple law enforcement agencies contacted incident , rubio s security detail had increased in size.
