the first highway planned along part of route reichsautobahn initiated nazi germany connect berlin poznań (posen). construction of highway, accelerated after poznań incorporated germany following invasion of poland in 1939, interrupted war , never finished, traces of earthworks visible on satellite photographs decades afterwards, between border germany , nowy tomyśl. of these traces have disappeared modern motorway built largely following same route. short stretch of uncompleted highway between border , rzepin finished dual carriageway road after 1945, in effect forming extension of german 12 highway (opened reichsautobahn in 1930s). except stretch, construction work not continued in decades after war.


new plans build a2 motorway formulated in communist poland in 1970s, possibly goal of completing in time moscow olympics in 1980. because of economic crisis hit country in late 1970s , continued throughout 1980s, 50 km (31 mi) section września konin opened in 1980s. construction of stretch (between Łódź , warsaw) started , abandoned, leaving interesting ruin informally named olimpijka, in turn demolished around 2010 when building of motorway resumed.


intensive construction of motorway started in 2001 after fall of communism in poland in 1989. out of planned total length of 610 km (380 mi), 359 km (223 mi) have been completed. section of 150 km (93 mi) (nowy tomyśl – poznań – września – konin) has been open since 2004. section toll road, exception of short stretch through poznań serves city s bypass (between interchanges @ głuchowo , kleszczewo). additional 100 km (62 mi) section konin stryków near Łódź opened on 26 july 2006. short 4.8 km (3.0 mi) bypass of stryków, consisting of 2 km extension of a2 , provisional single carriageway section of future motorway a1, opened in december 2008, ease heavy traffic in town generated when motorway reached it.


as of winter 2009/2010, plan finish whole section between border germany , warsaw spring of 2012, giving polish capital first motorway connection european motorway network in time euro 2012 football championships. ambitious goal jeopardised due various difficulties encountered in finalizing construction contracts , delays resulted. 90 km (56 mi) section stryków warsaw built in public-private partnership, negotiations between government , private companies interested in participating collapsed in february 2009 due disputes on financing terms. decided section of motorway built using public funds alone. new bidding process started on 27 march, , contracts design , construction of road signed on 28 september. section had been divided 5 parts , construction work began in 2010. contractors required have motorway open traffic in time euro 2012. goal ambitious 1 , proved challenging, given possibility of unexpected delays during construction , fact chinese consortium abandoned project less year later, new contractors had selected replace it. goal have motorway stretch provisionally opened traffic in time euro 2012, if s not completed, various restrictions such lower speed limit ensure safety. while not clear whether limited goal reached, motorway opened traffic in june 2012 after intensive construction work in final few months.


in november 2011 construction of stretch german border nowy tomyśl had been completed. road opened public traffic on 1 december. toll plazas on stretch of highway weren t opened until may 2012 use of western section of a2 free of charge until then.


it , c stretches of Łódź – warsaw section not yet finished. while road open traffic, 1 interchange (with road 50) not yet open, , overpasses local roads still not completed. plan complete them fall of 2012. @ terminus of motorway in warsaw forks 2 express roads, s2 , s8


in may 2013 interchange s3 (jordanowo) opened traffic. first stretch between interchange a2 motorway , Świebodzin north interchange. in june 2013 s3 extended further , opened traffic reach Świebodzin south interchange existing stretch of s3 expressway @ sulechów. in july 2013 elevated bypass of Świebodzin between interchanges Świebodzin north , Świebodzin south opened traffic extending s3 szczecin sulechów.
