the kunstmuseum liechtenstein built swiss architects meinrad morger , heinrich degelo, along christian kerez. have created museum building of great structural complexity , discreet simplicity. closed form “black box” of tinted concrete , black basalt stone. river pebbles embedded in building’s exterior provide subtle coloration, forming link landscape of alpine rhine valley. hand-carved surface of facade invites touching, , reflects surroundings. long rows of windows open black cube both inside , outside.
inside black box perfect white cube. building structured maximum space devoted art. visible exterior of building corresponds public exhibition spaces. there 6 exhibition rooms arranged around 2 diametrically opposed staircases. ground plan, reminiscent of windmill’s sails, enables diagonal views through whole building. these exhibition rooms offer art largest possible freedom through clarity , precision.
