biography
early life
his father john shaffer phipps (1874–1958) , mother, margarita celia grace (1876-1957). had 2 brothers, michael grace phipps (1910–1973) , hubert beaumont phipps (1906–1969), , 1 sister, margaret phipps boegner (1906-2006). paternal grandfather henry phipps, jr. (1839–1930) , maternal grandfather michael p. grace (1842-1920). grew @ old westbury gardens in old westbury, new york.
he attended groton school, private boarding school in groton, massachusetts, expelled after brought skunk church. transferred phillips exeter academy, private boarding school in exeter, new hampshire. graduated yale university, played on polo team.
career
he purchased radio stations in tallahassee area in 1940s , in georgia in 1950s. owned wctv television station in tallahassee-thomasville, georgia area.
conservation
he involved phipps-florida foundation, caribbean conservation corporation, , tall timbers research station , land conservancy. served on board of trustees of new york zoological society 1941 1980. patron of american museum of natural history.
he donated land on alligator point, florida nature conservancy study of birdlife. additionally, funded research project restore sturgeon breeding grounds in apalachicola river , suwannee river in florida.
polo
he played polo @ gulfstream polo club, polo club established family north of delray beach, florida in 1923. in 1941, brother michael grace phipps, charles skiddy von stade , alan l. corey, jr., won u.s. open polo championship @ meadow brook polo club against westbury team (gerald dempsey, earle hopping, stewart iglehart , windsor holden white).
personal life
he married elinor klapp phipps. had 2 sons:
colin phipps.
eugene phipps.
they resided in new york city. upon father s death, inherited orchard pond plantation. developed ayavalla plantation in leon county, florida quail-hunting plantation. died @ tallahassee memorial regional medical center in april 1982.
