biography
early life

purushottam born in gaodevi area (krupa hemraj chawl) in mumbai in gsb-(gaud saraswat brahmin) family lakshman , lakshmibai deshpande.his maternal grandfather, vaman mangesh dubhashi, poet , connoisseur of literature. had translated rabindranath tagore’s gitanjali marathi under title abhang gitanjali family used stay @ kenway house (opposite robert money school), proctor road, grant road. family moved jogeshwari within mumbai stayed @ newly formed saraswati baug colony until age of 8 years. first 8 years , saraswati baug described in story titled balpanicha kaal sukhacha (translation: happy days of childhood) in book purchundi. family moved vile parle.


education

deshpande studied @ parle tilak vidyalaya.he attended ismail yusuf college after high school , government law college llb. later attended fergusson college in pune , obtained masters in arts, (m.a.) in 1950. took lessons in playing harmonium dattopant rajopadhye of bhaskar sangitalaya.


personal life

his first wife (the former ms. sundar divadkar family in karjat) died after wedding in 1940s. on 12 june 1946, deshpande married colleague, sunita thakur.thakur accomplished writer in own right.


professional life

both deshpande , wife served teachers in orient high school, mumbai. worked years college professor in rani parvati devi college belgaum, karnataka , kirti college, mumbai. worked newly founded doordarshan, state owned indian tv. first person interview prime minister jawaharlal nehru on indian television. deputed bbc in uk year-long training. after spent time in france , in west germany. specific period , stays in these countries later travelogue apoorvai based upon. other travelogue include poorvarang , jave tyanchya desha

death

deshpande died in pune, maharashtra on 12 june 2000 due complications parkinson s disease. aged 80. survived wife sunita. died on 54th anniversary of marriage.
