locomotive 425 in blue paint scheme of 1990s


on june 12, 1992 425 painted recognizable appearance dark blue paint scheme. inspired reading company s own blue painted pacific (not, contrary popular belief, central railroad of new jersey s blue comet), locomotive s blue made distinct stand out. idea came mr. muller paint 425 in dark blue former reading company engineer charles w. kachel. locomotive featured guest @ steamtown national historic site grand opening in july 1995, , made number of excursions out of scranton. locomotive returned port clinton in late 1996. 425 s last excursion tamaqua fall fest on october 13, 1996. 1997 - 2008 when steam operations took extended break.


after decade of storage, rebuild work began bring 425 service. following 2 years of restoration, pacific made first operation under steam in december 2007 in partially repainted appearance. test run done on may 11, 2008 engine debuted in new lighter blue color , above-centered headlight. made return excursion service in june 2008 on round trip port clinton jim thorpe, run make often. rbmn s new star made many trips jim thorpe , other locations on next 3 years, employee runs, tourist trains on lehigh gorge scenic railway, , featured attraction of 2010 nrhs convention.
