after release of onomatopoeia, project went on hiatus. in 2005, laurie reformed project under name flobots. joining laurie mc/vocalist stephen brer rabbit brackett, bassist jesse walker, guitarist andy guerrero, trumpet player joe ferrone, viola player mackenzie gault, , drummer kenny ortiz. guerrero , ferrone in band bop skizzum together. revamped lineup, flobots released debut ep under new name flobots present...platypus, went on sell more 3,000 copies on next 2 years.

after release of platypus, flobots began work on next album. after year of writing , producing, flobots released proper debut album fight tools , sold out cd release show @ gothic theatre in englewood, colorado. denver post survey of music critics ranked flobots 51st best independent band in of colorado in late 2007.

flobots entered contest held denver radio station 93.3 (ktcl), called hometown holidays, allowed fans vote favorite songs 35 local bands. flobots subsequently won both radio portion of contest live performance award. result, station put handlebars full rotation @ end of january due immense popularity of song during contest.

in february 2008, flobots held show @ gothic theatre in englewood called heart attack featuring local bands hot iqs , paper bird. after show group approached , subsequently signed universal republic on 2 cd major label deal. on march 31, band announced playing tucson, arizona s major alternative rock festival, kfma day, metallica, apocalyptica, chiodos, , scars on broadway on may 16. flobots part of sixteenth annual kroq weenie roast on may 17, along atreyu, bad religion, flogging molly, metallica, offspring, pennywise, raconteurs, rise against, scars on broadway , seether. on july 20, 2008, flobots played @ mile high music festival in commerce city, colorado headliners dave matthews band , john mayer. on july 26, 2008, flobots played 93.3 s big gig @ coors amphitheater in greenwood village, colorado offspring. on september 1, 2008 performed @ bumbershoot music , arts festival in seattle, washington.

the single handlebars became popular on alternative rock radio in april 2008 , peaked @ no. 3 on billboard s modern rock tracks chart. fight tools peaked @ #15 on billboard charts, band s highest charting album date.

they made television debut on last call carson daly on may 20, 2008. on may 20, flobots spent 2 hours dr. drew , stryker answering sex questions on loveline , re-released album fight tools wider audience after newfound success. flobots appeared on tonight show jay leno on june 5, 2008 song handlebars . performed second single rise on late night conan o brien on october 13, 2008.
