the earliest incarnations of kbnt dates may 19, 1987, launch of k19bn san diego, owned cabrillo broadcasting corporation. station obtained univision affiliation televisa-owned xewt tijuana on january 1, 1990. station obtained on-air identity kbnt-tv. station s original facilities located in san diego s mira mesa neighborhood. @ time, san diegans receive station through cable television, because weak broadcast signal not reach city proper. eventually, station increased transmitting power, boosting signal; while still not reaching san diego proper, picked in escondido, san marcos, vista , fallbrook.


meanwhile, on october 29, 1987, k49bv in vista, owned vista television, launched. repeater of tbn network. in 1995, callsign changed khax-lp.


on december 3, 1992, low-power created in san diego. k17di, owned community broadcasting co. of san diego, simulcast of los angeles-based kwhy-tv. transmitter facilities based on palomar mountain, 45 miles (72 km) north of center of san diego. broadcast power of 11.9 kw, covering major part of city.


on december 23, 1994, k19bn reached agreement nbc affiliate knsd (channel 39, owned-and-operated station) retransmit programs on kbnt-lp (channel 62, later knsd-lp in 1997) in la jolla. k19bn became kbnt-lp on august 22, 1997. same year, ownership switched cabrillo entravision.


on june 28, 2000, major changes taking place @ univision san diego. univision affiliation switched channel 19 (closed in 2001) channel 17 (now obtaining kbnt-lp callsign , bought entravision), allowing univision reach san diego, national city , chula vista on air. allowed wb affiliate (now fox) kswb-tv (channel 69) operate on digital channel 19.


the new kbnt-lp added khax-lp relay station, extending coverage north. in 2002, kbnt-lp upgraded class status, becoming kbnt-ca. khax-lp sold entravision @ same time. station s relay in la jolla, knsd-lp 62, shut down in 2007. signal leased entravision knsd owners station venture operations, l.p. (operated joint venture between nbcuniversal , lin media until lin dropped out of venture in february 2013).


in fall of 2008, kbnt-cd expanded again three-repeater operation, when ktcd-lp switched being repeater of telemundo-affiliated sister station xhas-tv (channel 33) being repeater of kbnt.
