in september 1897, after failure of both interoceanic railroad , central american expo , deep economic crisis guatemala facing after plummeting of both coffee , silver international prices, people of quetzaltenango raised in arms against decision of president josé maría reina barrios extend presidential term until 1902. group of rebels, among them former secretary of reina barrios s cabinet -próspero morales-, began combat on 7 september 1897 attacking san marcos; after several battles , gains in ocos, coatepeque , colomba rebels defeated on 4 october 1897. result, on 23 october 1897, san pedro sacatepéquez became capital of san marcos department.
