thomas harris (1895 – 18 february 1974) prominent fianna fáil politician town. native of cloncurry, near meath border, raised in prosperous aunt elizabeth tierney. young man thomas harris had joined gaelic league while in school in prosperous , subsequently joined irish republican brotherhood, county kildare. harris fought maynooth contingent in 1916 easter rising in dublin , imprisoned in frongoch, wales until august 1916. harris later captain of prosperous company in 1917 , later vice-commandant north kildare battalion of irish republican army in 1921. farmer, represented constituencies of kildare 1927 1937, carlow–kildare 1937 1948, , kildare again 1948 1957. lost seat @ 1957 general election , retired politics.

the ruin of town accelerated rising of 1798 . prosperous 1 of first places united irishmen rose. in morning of 24 may 1798, large group of rebels attacked crown forces in town. 1 of buildings holding on 50 men, including leader, captain swayne, burned. oral tradition relates rebels led andrew farrell , john esmonde , assisted ruth hackett in burning of barracks. featured on 1798 monument in town square. rebels held prosperous until crown forces recaptured on 19th of june. troops under command of colonel stewart boasted of destroying receptacle of rebellion . said soldiers found drums inscription prosperous strength exists in unity , liberty .
