1539 edition

in 1539 first edition of calvin s psalter published. bore title aulcuns pseaumes et cantiques mys en chant , contained 18 psalms , hymns set music, including 12 versifications of marot (1, 2, 3, 15, 32, 51, 103, 114, 115, 130, 137, 143), 6 psalms of calvin (25, 36, 46, 91, 113, 138), ten commandments, song of simeon , apostles creed. of melodies therein familiar tunes used in german church in strasbourg (strasburg) @ time. apparently composed wolfgang dachstein or matthias greiter.


1542 edition

in 1541 calvin returned geneva, published new psalter in 1542. guillaume franc, cantor , music teacher there, contributed numerous tunes edition including psalms 6, 8, 19, 22, 24 (this tune used psalms 62, 95 , 111), , 38.


1543 edition

clément marot moved geneva in 1543, created rhymed versions of 19 psalms , song of simeon. although calvin wanted him complete job, left city , went turin, died in fall of 1544. work continued théodore de bèze. 1543 edition bore title la forme des prieres et chantz ecclesiastiques . there argument city council concerning publication because of presence in of rhymed version of angelic salutation. melodies new psalms composed guillaume franc.


1551 edition

this psalter appeared under title pseaumes octante trois de david. supervising composer louis bourgeois. not clear how many of melodies composed, assumed of new additions hand. includes first version of hymn tune known old 100th , setting psalm 100.


1562 edition

finally in 1562 complete psalter issued rhymed versions of 150 psalms. of earlier melodies replaced. last 40 melodies ascribed maistre pierre, pierre davantès. many of lyrics updated or replaced , of them written marot , de bèze.


editions since 1587

in 1587, light revision of psalter led théodore de bèze , corneille bonaventure bertram. next editions of genevan psalter followed revised version, considered official.
