Armament Mahan-class destroyer

the main battery of mahan class consisted of 5 dual purpose 5-inch (127 mm)/38 caliber guns, equipped mark 33 gun fire-control system. anti-aircraft battery had 4 water-cooled .50 caliber machine guns (12.7 mm). class fitted 3 quadruple torpedo tube mounts twelve 21-inch (533 mm) torpedo tubes, guided mark 27 torpedo fire control system. class equipped mark 11 torpedo or mark 12 torpedo, replaced mark 15 torpedo beginning in 1938. depth charge roll-off racks rigged on stern.


in 1942, mahan-class destroyers began wartime armament refitting process, of class not refitted until 1944. notable refits mahan class included removal of 1 5-inch/38 gun, typically replaced 2 twin bofors 40 mm guns (1.6 in) , between 4 , 6 20 mm oerlikon (0.9 in) guns increase ships light anti-aircraft (aa) armament.


in january 1945, removal of 2 quadruple torpedo tubes authorized permit substitution of 2 40 mm quad mounts. in june, removal of third centerline tube authorized make way 2 40 mm twin mounts abreast of aft stack. ships receiving these aa modifications have directors installed new 40 mm mounts; these mark 51s replaced new blind-firing gffc mark 63 installations radar.
