history

the original image of our lady of salvation


much of history regarding statue of lady of salvation , marian devotion centered on rely heavily on written accounts, based on tradition, of first parish priest of joroan, rev lamberto s. fulay (1919–1935), in booklet kasaysayan kan ladawan ni birhen de salvacion.


the calpi tree

according fulay account, in 1770s haciendero named don silverio arcilla of buhi, assigned tenant farmer called mariano dacoba, 1 of vast estates in joroan (once known cagnipa), satellite barrio of buhi. while dacoba clearing parts of arcilla s hacienda 1 day, chopped down big calpi tree. although severed @ base, tree s leaves did not wilt , maintained life , freshness. tenant informed arcilla it, , latter consulted pastor of buhi.


a sculptor called bagacumba commissioned pastor of buhi carve image calpi trunk dacoba had found. 3 images carved out of wood: of our lady of salvation, 1 of our lady of solitude, , of saint anthony of padua. on 25 august 1776, image of our lady of salvation lent joroan on condition village s residents build chapel @ centre of barrio. consequently, sotera cababag assigned chapel s hermana mayor, in charge of caring image.


the 1853 agreement

buhi image s rightful owner arcilla (who owned land statue s wood came from), parish priest had commissioned, , sculptor town. on 21 january 1853, buhi , joroan had agreement transferring rights on image latter. buhi s parish priest , gobernadorcillo, rev antonio guadalajara , mariano buenaflor, respectively, made pact joroan s barrio lieutenants. in accordance agreement, buhi surrendered rights on image if people of joroan made offering of fifty pesos, , additional twenty-five bell.

first miracle

the beaches of joroan, muslim raiders mounted attacks, folklore situates apparition of our lady of salvation.


the third miracle apparition of our lady of salvation. 4 devotees island of catanduanes went on pilgrimage joroan, bringing along them set of beeswax candles intended offer @ shrine. upon reaching shore, 3 of them made detour buhi light candles saint anthony, while fourth pilgrim left guard boat. fourth man strolled along beach @ dusk, met woman carrying child. woman asked him candle may light way home mountains, dark. man refused since candle not his, woman insistent , promised return candle next morning if come house uphill. out of generosity, man acquiesced lady, told him can next day enquire lived town lieutenant of joroan, can return him candle.


the next day, man did told, town lieutenant did not know mysterious lady lived. lieutenant referred pilgrim hermana mayor, of no help, save advising man seek divine guidance @ chapel of our lady of salvation. upon arriving @ chapel, pilgrim surprised when, @ foot of image, lay unused , unlit same candle had lent mysterious lady day before. upon seeing image resembled mysterious woman, man filled compunction. , after leaving candle alone, prostrated , asked virgin pray sins.


final muslim raid

the fourth miracle attributed our lady of salvation occurred during years dominga de los reyes succeeded tiray hermana mayor. while on 1 of raids, moro pirates said have retreated after seeing vision of heavily armed men. vision said have traumatised raiders last muslim attack on shores of joroan.


the boat

on eve of feast of our lady of salvation in 1884, group partido sailing joroan when whirlwind attacked boat. giant waves capsized boat, regained balance. though dumped water, passengers clothes dry though freshly ironed. people in boat attributed escape death our lady of salvation.


boundary dispute

in late 19th century, territorial dispute arose on whether joroan governed buhi in ambos camarines, or tiwi in albay. captain vera of albay, however, argued tiwi s proximity joroan gave rightful jurisdiction. vera won case, , joroan annexed tiwi.


construction of new church

joroan became peaceful in 1860s, boundary dispute resolved, , muslims no longer attacked barrio. during time, doña clara de vera, wife of landlord named don vicente de vera, became image s hermana mayor. doña clara vowed care image until death, , financed silver , gold plating.


unsatisfied lifetime service, de vera initiated constriction of new church @ centre of joroan. in eagerness construct, sought of friend, doña saturnina de bayot of tabaco, finance project. acquaintance, don manuel casa of manila, contributed greatly, sending needed materials , architect. during long trip joroan, architect casa had dispatched fell ill, , men had support him supervised construction. after great deal of pain, architect cured on ninth day of work.

in 1917, joroan planned hold grand celebration beginning of novena honouring image few days after fiesta. on ninth day, people of joroan requested of rev ricardo sayson, tiwi parish priest, image allowed stay little longer in joroan might make further homage virgin. sayson refused, , arrogantly taunted people, daring them file complaint @ court.


the people of joroan drafted letter rev john bernard mcginley, bishop of nueva cáceres, requesting designation of separate pastor joroan. pedro colar , lino clutario tasked deliver request, , set out see in naga, turned since mcginley visiting albay. emissaries overtook mcginley in iriga, bishop refused discuss matter there, suggesting talk in malinao on 17 november 1917. on appointed date, joroan again sent clutario, time miguel diolata, , brothers felipe , lorenzo clutario.

creation of joroan parish

in 1918, rev. tomás bernales succeeded sayson pastor of tiwi. bishop mcginley authorised him settle dispute joroan. in may of year, councilor alfajara , lieutenant cultivo of joroan met bernales, , both sides agreed joroan become separate parish covering sogod, matalibong, bariis, maynonong, misibis, dapdap, , mayong. bishop mcginley informed of agreement, , named rev. lamberto s. fulay first parish priest. parish of joroan canonically erected on 18 september 1919, fulay assuming duties curé on 8 october.

episcopal decree of 1919

among terms of agreement made when joroan raised status of parish episcopal decree constandoonos of 18 september 1919. decree states that:



menos qué por el espacio de quince días continuos cada año pueda estar (la imagen) en la iglesia de tiwi, bajo instrucción del parroco de tiwi, para el debido culto de los fieles. y se ordena que la transferancia y conducción annual tiwi sean hechos con todo decoro y solemnidad convenientes.


(“except space of fifteen consecutive days, image can stay in church of tiwi under disposition of parish priest due cult of faithful. ordained annual transfer , conduction tiwi made proper decorum , solemnity.”)



although parish now, joroan still had several issues. decree no guarantee image in joroan s possession, committee organised purpose of appealing bishop mcginley decree s revision , removal of clause “except span of fifteen days”. mcginley rejected request further stating decree part of terms of agreement elevation of joroan status of parish, , representatives signed it.


rising tensions

in 1920, joroan reminded comply decree. people however, still adamant fear unfavourable might happen , majority of people, women, no longer favoured idea of lending image of lady of salvation tiwi. prompted bishop mcginley dispatch joroan fr. luis dimaruba, priest vested ecclesiastical authority, advise people regarding insolence, , persuade them urgency of lending image tiwi since fiesta approaching. however, after encouragement , assurance of image’s return parish priest led people reluctantly lend tiwi image.


on 6 august 1920, cohort bernales leading them, arrived in joroan take image. before image taken, bernales reassured people image shall returned after fifteen days. absence of image in altar of church made people of joroan anxious never lost track of fifteen-day promise. however, realizing tiwi had not yet returned image though fifteen-day agreement had expired, people dispatched big boat tiwi remind bernales agreement had expired , image.


the august riot

when fulay greeted bernales, later compelled return image. huge number of people tiwi present in church bid image farewell. however, when image handed on fulay, 1 of onlookers screamed , seized image bernales. visitors joroan cried foul , rioting ensued.


the message clear: people of tiwi refused give image violently declaring image theirs. claim backed alleged testimony of elders of tiwi image in question copy of original: copy belonged tiwi, while original joroan’s. folklore held in days there antique image of our lady of salvation, , image’s hermana mayor mitay. when still in condition used brought down chapel whenever image in tiwi, has been deteriorated age. people of joroan abandoned it, , title of our lady of salvation present image bears originated antique image.


final settlement

fulay, seeing brawl no good, advised parishioners go home instead. wrote letter bishop mcginley heightened tensions between peoples of joroan , tiwi. in response, mcginley reassured joroan image returned them. owing previous rioting, image kept in house of vicente vera more month, , on 28 september of year image returned joroan.


to prevent future violence, bishop mcginley on 18 august 1920 declared that:



to keep ardour of same marian devotion in tiwi , prevent further tensions, mcginley permitted creation of replica tiwi. original image has been permanently enshrined in joroan since 1920.


later years
coronation

on 8 december 1975, teotimo pacis, bishop of legazpi, formally declared virgin mary, under title of our lady of salvation, heavenly patroness of albay. in 1976, diocese formally celebrated bicentennial jubilee of patroness. 1 of projects during bicentennial completion of shrine. original design of shrine handiwork of juanito pelea of tiwi, later redesigned , finished under supervision of fidel siappo of legazpi city. after completion, bishop pacis blessed shrine on 21 august 1976.


on 25 august, culmination bicentennial year, jaime cardinal sin, archbishop of manila, crowned our lady of salvation, while joroan church proclaimed diocesan shrine.
