cathedral of sts. peter , paul

– petrov hill; gothic church rebuilt in baroque style during 18th century, later partially reconstructed in neo-gothic style; 2 characteristic towers (81 m high) dating 1905; cathedral since 1777



st. michael s church

– dominican square (dominikánské náměstí); baroque church 17th century, until edict on idle institutions in 1780s church of dominican order; later (1905 1950) used redemptorists; of former monastery buildings serve new town hall (nová radnice) of brno



church of holy cross

– church of order of friars minor capuchin, baroque building 17th century; crypt under church unique air-circulation system providing natural mummification of buried bodies



st. mary magdalene s church

– baroque church 1650s, built franciscans on site of older church originated synagogue closed after expulsion of jews in 15th century; franciscans resided here until edict on idle institutions; later church (and adjacent monastery) belonged congregation of blessed sacrament (1912-1950); since 1991 has been administered congregatio fratrum sanctissimi sacramenti



st. joseph s church

– former ursuline church, nowadays closed



st. johns church loreto chapel

– church of st. john baptist , john evangelist, since middle ages part of franciscan monastery; gothic church renovated in baroque style during 1720s-1730s, when loreto chapel holy stairs built next church



church of assumption

– baroque church of jesuits, remnants of jesuit college 16th/17th centuries, interior partly 18th century



st. james s church

– parish church of non-slavonic inhabitants of brno, built 14th 16th centuries predominantly in gothic style; spire (from 1592) 92m high (the 7th highest building in czech republic , tallest in brno). mistakenly called st jacob s.



st. thomas s church

– baroque church monumental facade 1665–1675 on spot of gothic 1 damaged in thirty years war; since 1350 part of augustinian monastery, planned burial place of moravian rulers (margrave jobst buried there); in 1780s augustinians moved staré brno


protestant , orthodox

bethlehem church

– built in 19th century czech-speaking protestants



comenius church

– built in 1860s in neo-gothic style german-speaking protestants (till expulsion of germans after world war ii)



st. wenceslas (orthodox) church

– built in 1930–1931 @ foot of Špilberk hill
