the year 1698 saw event had featured in many guide books , directories, when on 20 august last duel fought in norfolk took place on cawston heath. contestants sir henry hobart mp of blickling hall , oliver le neve, lawyer great witchingham. le neve, described great sportsman , great drinker, fought left-handed , wounded in arm sir henry had reputation swordsman. however, le neve struck , injured opponent badly died next day @ blickling. there appear have been no seconds or witnesses, duel illegal. le neve fled holland returned england 2 years later, having received pardon.
it said locally details of duel came girl hiding in bushes, , tales still told of unfortunate event commemorated duel stone stands in small national trust plot near woodrow garage, norwich road, cawston.
