when built in 1965 @ cost of $3.7 million, haydon burns library considered state of art. 126,000 sq ft (12,000 m) 3-story building designed hardwick. hardwick , building committee library’s trustees toured 6 new , significant libraries throughout country, intending incorporate best ideas in library design , operation jacksonville’s new facility. john hall jacobs, nationally known library consultant, contributed design process. mr. hardwick worked on library building s design on span of 5 years, , comprehensive plan specified interior furnishings, graphics , use of innovative, free-standing book shelves. chose cheerful colors , limited use of natural light. elements hardwick did not specify mosaic tile murals, designed ann williams.

the building served jacksonville well, mid-1990s, small number of patrons using it. haydon burns library closed on september 3, 2005 , after moving newly constructed facility, bids accepted old burns library building. transfer of building city private owner turned out lengthy process. eventual developer, main branch, llc met hardwick , pleased exterior remain unchanged.
