a competition held in 1880, municipal water authority of porto, under direction of antónio pinto de magalhães (then president of câmara municipal of porto). resulted in 1882 contract submeter, compagnie générale des eaux pour l etranger. decree issued on 17 july 1882, elaborated , approved provisional contract, promulgated on 27 july.

work initiated in 1883, begin supply of water city. new project included supply included design lion fountain. on 30 august 1883, design rejected municipal commission, on 13 august 1885, municipal representatives approved project sent carlos de pezerat (4 july). construction began on 25 september, , water began flow on 19 december 1886.

by 1 january 1887, public water supply project city of porto concluded.

from 1942, fountain less obligatory passage channels of city, , began supplied arca de sá noronha.
