the original phc ran until 1987, when keillor ended focus on other projects. in 1989, launched new live radio program new york city, american radio company of air, had same format phc. in 1992, moved arc st. paul, , year later changed name prairie home companion; has remained fixture of saturday night radio broadcasting ever since.


on typical broadcast of prairie home companion, keillor’s name not mentioned unless guest addresses him name, although sketches feature keillor alter ego, carson wyler. in closing credits, keillor reads, gives himself no billing or credit except written sarah bellum, joking reference own brain.


keillor regularly takes radio company on road broadcast popular venues around united states; touring production typically features local celebrities , skits incorporating local color. in april 2000, took program edinburgh, scotland, producing 2 performances in city s queen s hall, broadcast bbc radio. toured scotland program celebrate 25th anniversary. keillor s final episode of show recorded live audience of 18,000 fans @ hollywood bowl in california on july 1, 2016, , broadcast next day, ending 42 seasons of show. after performance, president obama phoned keillor congratulate him. show continued on october 15, 2016 chris thile host.
