at time of death, wellstone ahead in polls. after walter mondale chosen dfl candidate, in poll taken few days before election mondale leading 51% 45%. on election day, mondale leading in votes. nightfall, however, norm coleman pulled ahead, winning 49.5 percent 47.3 percent.
