as jamaica plain became part of boston, rate of growth continued increase. triple decker house, defining image in urban new england architecture, first showed in 1870s, , spread rapidly in 1890s. in jamaica plain, first commercial blocks built in 1870s, first brick commercial building erected in 1875. in 1873, imposing brick police station built on seavern s avenue, , year later built eliot school renamed west roxbury high school, changed jamaica plain high school after annexation. stony brook valley had long been industrial center of jamaica plain. in 1871, haffenreffer brewery opened near boylston , amory streets, taking advantage of stony brook aquifer , presence of german immigrants in area. same year, boylston schul verein german social club opened across railroad tracks, 1 of many organizations served german residents in neighborhood. south, b.f. sturtevant company opened industrial fan factory in 1878 along railroad tracks between williams , green street, grew employ 500 employees. in 1901, factory suffered massive fire , company moved hyde park several miles south.

a notable company moved heath street after prohibition moxie soft drink company. invented augustin thompson in lowell massachusetts in 1876, company marketed distinctively flavored moxie shift medicinal tonic soft drink, coca-cola, , outsold coke in 1920. company stopped advertising distinctive product during great depression, , never recovered lost market share. after plant closed in 1953, building torn down city of boston new bromley heath public housing projects.
