Further Japanese raids Bombing of Darwin



after 19 february 1942 japanese raid, northern territory , parts of western australia s north bombed approximately 100 times between 4 march 1942 , 12 november 1943. 1 of heaviest attacks took place on 16 june 1942 when japanese force set fire oil fuel tanks around harbour , inflicted severe damage vacant banks, stores , railway yards. allied navies largely abandoned naval base @ darwin after initial 19 february attack, dispersing of forces brisbane, fremantle, , other smaller seaports. conversely, allied air commanders launched build-up in darwin area, building more airfields , deploying many squadrons.


the 4 ijn aircraft carriers (akagi, kaga, hiryū, , sōryū) participated in bombing of darwin later sunk during battle of midway in june 1942.
