on 17 september 2006, 17-year-old witsel made debut standard liège during competitive game against fc brussels when replaced steven defour in 89th minute. eleven days later, made european debut substitute.

on 3 september 2012, witsel signed zenit saint petersburg €40 million, after signing five-year contract. witsel made debut in russian premier league on 14 september, replacing konstantin zyryanov in 70th minute zenit fell 2–0 terek grozny. scored first 2 goals club on 30 november when zenit brushed aside spartak moscow 4–2 @ luzhniki stadium. witsel scored zenit s winner against terek grozny on 30 march 2013, eighth-minute strike, side cruised 3–0 league victory.


in zenit s first match of 2014–15 uefa champions league group stage on 16 september 2014, witsel scored zenit s second goal in 2–0 away victory on former club benfica. after finishing third in champions league group, zenit parachuted europa league knockout phase; in first leg of round of 16 clash against torino on 12 march 2015, witsel scored on rebound zenit defeated italian club 2–0. on 26 april, witsel scored game s goal in seventeenth minute zenit defeated arsenal tula in league match @ petrovskiy stadium. on sunday 17 may, witsel played full 90 minutes zenit drew 1–1 fc ufa, earning point needed secure premier league crown, club s fourth overall , witsel s first zenit.


in 2015 russian super cup on 12 july 2015, witsel converted penalty shot in 4–2 penalty shoot-out victory on fc lokomotiv moscow after match had finished 1–1.


tianjin quanjian

on 3 january 2017, zenit officially announced witsel has moved chinese club tianjin quanjian.


on 4 march 2017, witsel made debut quanjian in 2–0 loss guangzhou r&f. week later scored club s first ever goal in chinese super league during 1–1 draw shanghai greenland shenhua.
