Roman times Little Chester

it historic area of derby, location of large fortified roman settlement, called derventio. fort, later became town, not protected river crossing, stood @ junction , gave protection 5 roman roads. important ryknield street, connected gloucester , west country yorkshire , north east.

little of roman settlement remains @ little chester today, apart 2 roman wells, 1 on marcus street , other in garden of vicarage of st paul s church. however, series of excavations in last fifty years have established both importance , prosperity, including discovery of underfloor heating system on parker’s piece , abundance of coins.
