the second , orange street uso club erected army corps of engineers @ cost of $80,000. along identical structure on nixon street african-american servicemen, opened in december 1941, same month japanese attacked pearl harbor. 1941 1945, uso hosted 35,000 uniformed visitors week. renovated sensitivity historic character, hannah block historic uso (hbhuso) lobby serves museum world war ii memorabilia , other artifacts displayed. building rededicated in ms. block s name in 2006 , restored 1943 wartime character in 2008. building listed in national register of historic places. world war ii wilmington home front heritage coalition, volunteer 501(c)(3) preservation organization, de facto preservationist of building s history , maintains home front museum.
