since retiring play, samuel has coached @ various levels , in various roles. coached third base detroit tigers in 2005 after having coached first base team since 1999. managed double-a binghamton mets 2006 season, , named 3rd base coach baltimore orioles on october 31, 2006, remained through first part of 2010.



in august 2008, samuel inducted philadelphia phillies wall of fame @ citizens bank park.


samuel joined phillies coaching staff 2011 season 3rd base coach, former 3rd base coach sam perlozzo moving 1st base coach. in 2013, moved 1st base coach ryne sandberg taking on duties @ 3rd base. upon ryne sandberg being named interim manager, samuel returned filling role of 3rd base coach phillies.


in 2010, inducted hispanic heritage baseball museum hall of fame.

samuel named interim manager of orioles after dave trembley s dismissal on june 4, 2010. took on ballclub in last place in american league (al) east majors worst record @ 15–39. during brief tenure, team had pair of four-game win streaks. first 1 on june 24–27 highlighted three-game sweep of washington nationals @ camden yards. first four-game road sweep since 1995 achieved after vanquishing of eventual al champion texas rangers @ rangers ballpark in arlington 2 weekends later , prior all-star break. beyond this, orioles showed little tangible improvement went 17–34 under samuel, stint ended on august 1 5–4 loss @ kauffman stadium, third straight defeat kansas city royals. 3 days earlier on july 29, buck showalter announced samuel s successor on full-time basis beginning on august 3. after declining offer return old third-base coaching job, samuel accepted position elsewhere in organization evaluator dominican republic academy remainder of season.
