the main staircase of college


the former-college located in urban context, addorssing avenida da boavista (to south) , rua de pedro hispanoto north). east of avenue other palacettes, among them former-residence of viscountess of lobõo (already classified). west larger buildings, modern, including hotel meridien. building sited on elevated plateau relative avenida da boavista taking form of trapezoid, rear of building limited high, granite wall supporting terrain. in front, along avenida da boavista similar granite wall, of smaller dimensions, surmounted iron grate.


the rectangular building basement, two-storeys mansard roof. simple plan, principal facade (oriented avenida da boavista) includes porch fronted staircase , defined balustrade in granite. flanking portico windows on ground , second floors framed in granite , curved lintels. on rear profile, building marked slender , aligned aperture, while side elevations (equal 1 another) features ground floor 4 windows , upper floor balcony doors. surfaces have continuous cornice in granite closed , areas vases, interrupted main facade in center small backrest surmounted perfect arch inscribed monogram brs.


the interior space marked in center double bifurcated staircase lit wood above skylight. remaining rooms organized around staircase in symmetrical manner. treatment on doors, includes etched glass, framed in granite or crafted wood.
