the bnp won 140 seats, 11 short of majority. party capable of forming government, zia sworn in country s first female prime minister on 20 march support of majority of deputies in parliament.


the acting president shahabuddin ahmed granted khaleda zia of powers vested in president @ time, returning bangladesh parliamentary system in september 1991. unanimous vote, parliament passed 12th amendment constitution in 1991. bnp-led government formally restored parliamentary system.
