the central basin separate eastern basin, isostatic rebound in eastern end, water topped norfolk moraine, creating 1 lake deep channel called pennsylvania channel. alternative may have been significant inflow of water south shore tributaries, raising water level, while deepening pennsylvania channel, until single lake created.
