at public meeting in alresford on 14 may, onslow reported subscriptions defence fund pouring in, , invitations visit , speak had been received many towns. claimant addressed meetings , down country, journalists following campaign commented on pronounced cockney accent, suggestive of east london origins. campaign drew in high-level supporters, among whom george hammond whalley, controversial anti-catholic mp peterborough. , onslow incautious in speeches; after meeting in st james s hall, london, on 11 december 1872, each made specific charges against attorney general , government of trying pervert course of justice. both fined £100 contempt of court.
