zombo played austin mavericks ushl 17-year-old during 1980–81 season, earning 36 points in 43 games. in 1981 nhl entry draft, detroit red wings drafted zombo in 8th round, 149th overall. despite being drafted, zombo decided attend university of north dakota , play hockey team, north dakota fighting sioux.
