the state home number of pre-hispanic cultures part of western mexico. archeological evidence dates human occupation of area far 1500 bce, sites here contemporary san lorenzo on gulf coast , tlatilco in valley of mexico. 1 period of area’s development called los ortices era, began around 500 bce. during time elements characterize pre-hispanic peoples of colima appear, including shaft tombs , distinctive ceramic style called rojo bruñido, or burnished red.


the next phase, called comala , centered on site of same name, around 100 600 ce. comala people perfected burnished red pottery , created representations of people , animals skill , fluid lines. best known of these figures known fattened dogs. comala site shows influence teotihuacan. around 500 ce, site in armería developed along river of same name.


the chanal site active 6th 15th centuries , main culture colima area. belonging culture number of smaller sites , of ones known , explored date. after chanal largest related site la campana contain pyramidal bases , plazas structures containing rounded edges. images of huehueteotl , tlaloc appear culture, may indicate origins of cultures settled central mexico.


there 1 other site called periquillo, indicates 1 late migration colimas around 10th century north.


at beginning of 16th century, purépechas invaded territory of tecos , got far salt fields of tzacoalco. however, chief named colimotl or colliman defeated p’urhépechas during salitre war (guerra del salitre). after this, tecos conquered sayula, zapotlán , amunla, making them dominant cultural group in part of state. both periquillo , chanal sites occupied when spanish arrived in 16th century.
