courtney joined newtown in 1908 in professional code, moved wests in 1909 , north sydney in 1910. found club home @ wests in 1911 played next thirteen seasons, amassing on 300 games across grades.
he selected on inaugural kangaroo tour of 1908-09 appearing in 3 tests , in total of thirty-one games on tour on top-scoring forward 10 tries. made second kangaroo tour in 1911-12 in made twenty 5 match appearances. played in 3 other test series against great britain @ home in 1910 , 1914 , against new zealand in 1909, represented australasia. on 14 june 1924 when courtney 39 played in game wests against glebe alongside son, ed courtney, jr.,. remains time father , son combination has played in sydney first grade game.
