History Spectroscopy

the history of spectroscopy began isaac newton s optics experiments (1666–1672). newton applied word spectrum describe rainbow of colors combine form white light , revealed when white light passed through prism. during 1800s, joseph von fraunhofer made experimental advances dispersive spectrometers enabled spectroscopy become more precise , quantitative scientific technique. since then, spectroscopy has played , continues play significant role in chemistry, physics , astronomy.

in 1672, in first paper submitted royal society, sir isaac newton described experiment in permitted sunlight pass through small hole , through prism. newton found sunlight, looks white us, made of mixture of colors of rainbow
in 1802, william hyde wollaston built improved spectrometer included lens focus sun’s spectrum on screen. upon use, wollaston realized colors not spread uniformly, instead had missing patches of colors, appeared dark bands in spectrum. later, in 1815, german physicist joseph fraunhofer examined solar spectrum, , found 600 such dark lines (missing colors), known fraunhofer lines, or absorption lines.
