flint born in applegarth in dumfriesshire on 14 march 1838.
he son of robert flint, @ time farm overseer, , wife, grace johnston. first school @ moffat. in 1852, entered glasgow university, distinguished himself (without graduating) in arts , divinity.

flint appointed number of foundation lectureships. baird lecturer (1876-7); in 1880 crossed america, , delivered course stone lecturer @ princeton; in 1887-8 croall lecturer. elected on 21 may 1883 corresponding member of institute of france (académie des sciences morales et politiques), , elected fellow of royal society of edinburgh in 1880. proposers sir robert christison, sir alexander grant, alexander campbell fraser , peter guthrie tait served vice president society 3 sessions: 1886-1892; 1893-1899; , 1902-1907.
he resigned chair in 1903 devote himself literary work, purpose hampered failing health. post filled rev prof william paterson paterson (later moderator of general assembly of church of scotland.

flint died, unmarried, @ residence, 5 royal terrace, edinburgh, on 25 november 1910. in 2015 building occupied restaurant , hotel.
he buried against eastern wall of old south section of liberton cemetery in south edinburgh.
