seven of 8 species confined south-eastern coastal plain of united states. 1 species, s. purpurea, continues north , west canada. typical habitat warm-temperate; sarracenia perennial , require distinct summer , winter. few subspecies or varieties (s. rubra subsp. alabamensis, s. rubra subsp. jonesii, , s. purpurea var. montana) can found more inland in mountains (e.g. appalachian mountains).
sarracenia tend inhabit permanently wet fens, swamps, , grassy plains. these habitats tend acidic (low ph) soil made of sand , sphagnum moss. frequently, soil poor in nutrients, particularly nitrates, , continuously leached moving water or made unavailable plant roots low ph. plants gain advantage ability extract nutrients insect prey in mineral-poor environment. plants prefer strong, direct sunlight no shade.
in several cases, carnivorous plant enthusiasts have introduced s. purpurea suitable habitats outside of natural range, has naturalized. of these populations decades old; oldest known occurrence in swiss jura mountains around 1 hundred years old. besides switzerland, such naturalized populations can found in ireland, england (lake district), germany (bavaria, lusatia) , in mendocino county along california coast.
