mahan

uss mahan commissioned on east coast in september 1936 , served in atlantic area until july 1937. sailed southern california coast fleet training before moving on pearl harbor. @ sea when japanese attacked pearl harbor on 7 december 1941, mahan participated in initial post-attack efforts in search of strike force. ship joined task force 17 in february 1942, conducted raids on several atolls in marshall , gilbert islands. late in march, returned pearl harbor , proceeded west coast overhaul. august 1942, mahan operating out of pearl harbor.

in october 1942, mahan assigned task force 61 , took part in battle of santa cruz islands. engagement cost navy 74 aircraft, aircraft carrier hornet, , 1 destroyer. while en route nouméa, new caledonia, mahan , battleship south dakota collided, causing severe damage both ships. temporary repairs made mahan , steamed pearl harbor new bow. pulled out of pearl harbor in january 1943. in months follow, mahan escorted convoys between new hebrides , fiji islands, performed patrol assignments off new caledonia , engaged in operations in australian waters. assigned amphibious force of rear admiral daniel e. barbey, mahan participated in succession of wide-ranging amphibious campaigns in new guinea , new britain. in february , march 1944, saw action 7th fleet in admiralty islands. after ship ordered west coast overhaul, leaving yard in july 1944 pearl harbor.


returning new guinea, mahan began escort convoys between hollandia, in indonesia , leyte, in philippine islands. november 1944, doing anti-submarine patrols off leyte. on 7 december 1944 while patrolling channel between leyte , ponson island, group of japanese suicide aircraft overwhelmed mahan @ ormoc bay. disabled attack, abandoned , sunk destroyer. mahan received 5 battle stars world war ii service.

uss cummings served in pacific fleet in late 1930s, participating in numerous individual , fleet training exercises. in 1940, served on security patrols off west coast. cummings went on goodwill visit several ports in south pacific, including auckland, new zealand, , tahiti. destroyer hit fragments while docked in pearl harbor during japanese attack, , suffered few casualties. escorted convoys between pearl harbor , west coast first 6 months of world war ii. in june 1942, transferred convoy escort duties in south pacific until august, when had overhaul in san francisco, , returned role convoy escort in south pacific.


in january 1944, cummings joined screen fast carrier strike force while raided japanese positions in central pacific. in march, cummings sailed trincomalee, ceylon, rendezvoused british ships exercises. in april, ship joined british force screen during air strikes on sabang, indonesia. returned ceylon in may , moved on exmouth gulf, australia. british force, cummings sortied air strikes on soerabaja, java, before leaving pearl harbor.


by july in san francisco escort heavy cruiser baltimore, ship carried president franklin d. roosevelt pearl harbor. cummings joined 3rd fleet battle of leyte gulf in october 1944. next month, bombarded iwo jima in preparation amphibious assault on island. ship operated off okinawa during invasion. after war, cummings returned united states , decommissioned in december 1945 , sold scrap in july 1947. received 7 battle stars world war ii service.

uss drayton made shakedown cruise europe late in 1936, , finished final trials in united states. left norfolk, virginia, in june 1937 san diego, california, join scouting force. in july, drayton participated in search lost american pilot, amelia earhart. next 2 years, exercised along west coast, hawaiian islands, , caribbean. when japanese attacked pearl harbor, drayton @ sea able participate in post-attack efforts in search of enemy force. during succeeding 3 months, escorted convoy christmas island (kiritimati), screened carrier in airstrike on bougainville island, , screened tanker suva harbor, fiji islands. in late november 1942 drayton became part of task force 67, intercepted japanese naval force guarding transports en route resupply guadalcanal. battle of tassafaronga followed.


throughout june, july , august 1943, drayton escorted australian troop carriers townsville, australia, milne bay, new guinea. in september, ship supported amphibious landing @ lae, new guinea. later in september, participated in amphibious landing @ finschhafen, new guinea. after escorting troops arawe, new britain, in december 1943, drayton participated in landings there , @ borgen bay, near cape gloucester, new britain. destroyer took part in invasion of los negros island in admiralty islands during february 1944. reported 7th fleet in october , performed patrol , escort duty in leyte gulf. in december 1944, while screening convoy san pedro bay in philippines, japanese bomber attacked ship, killing 2 men , wounding seven. next day, fought off enemy fighters; 1 crashed 5 /38 caliber gun mount, killing 6 men , wounding twelve. august 1945 on way new york, arriving in september. drayton decommissioned in october 1945 , sold scrap in december 1946. received 11 battle stars world war ii service.


lamson

uss lamson shipped out of norfolk, virginia, in june 1937 san diego, california, less year after naval service began. engaged in exercises , tactical training until sailing pearl harbor in october 1939. next 2 years, lamson continued training base in hawaii. following attack on pearl harbor, joined post-attack efforts search japanese strike force. in february 1942 became part of newly formed anzac squadron, consisting of australian, new zealand, , american warships in suva, fiji islands. in march, operated squadron cover group southeast of papua new guinea. in late november 1942, lamson assigned task force 67 , took part in battle of tassafaronga.


for next 8 months, lamson screened convoys en route guadalcanal. august 1943, had moved on milne bay, new guinea, , participated in september amphibious landings @ lae , finschhafen. in december, ship engaged in pre-invasion bombardment of arawe , landings @ cape gloucester, new britain. after overhaul , training @ pearl harbor, lamson joined 7th fleet in october 1944. in december 1944, took part in amphibious landing @ ormoc bay, leyte, philippine islands. there struck kamikaze set fire ship, killing 21 men , injuring 50. fires extinguished rescue tug , lamson saved. after extensive repairs in puget sound naval shipyard, returned pacific , operated off iwo jima, sailed united states in november 1945. in may 1946, participated in able nuclear test of operation crossroads; sunk in baker test in july 1946. lamson received 5 battle stars world war ii service.

after overhaul, flusser returned pearl harbor. in august, escorted convoy eniwetok , moved on majuro in marshall islands, patrolled bypassed japanese-held atolls. on patrol off wotje atoll, ship fired on shore battery left 9 of crew members wounded. in october, sailed north san pedro bay duty in leyte gulf , surigao strait. december 1944, flusser had escorted convoys hollandia jayapura leyte , taken part in amphibious landing @ ormoc bay. in march 1945, flusser provided escort support landing near cebu in philippines. during july participated in balikpapan campaign in borneo, escorting ships , covering landing. after occupation duty in okinawa during september , october, sailed san diego, california, arriving in november 1945. during 1946, flusser took part in atomic weapons tests in marshall islands. there, steamed pearl harbor, norfolk, virginia. destroyer decommissioned there in december 1946 , sold in january 1948. flusser received 8 battle stars world war ii service.

uss reid came naval service in november 1936. 1937 until 1941, participated in training , fleet maneuvers in atlantic , pacific. reid berthed @ pearl harbor when japanese attacked, escaped without damage while gunners fired @ enemy attackers. after attack, reid did patrol duty in hawaiian waters, , later escorted convoys san francisco, california. late in may 1942, reid steamed north pearl harbor bombard japanese positions in kiska , supported landings @ adak, alaska. while conducting anti-submarine patrol in august, brought japanese submarine surface heavy depth charge barrage, , opened fire on until capsized , sank. 5 of submarine s crew survived , rescued reid. october, patrolling waters near new caledonia, samoa, , fiji islands. in january 1943, ship bombarded several japanese locations on guadalcanal.


during september 1943, reid provided support landings @ lae , finschhafen, new guinea. in december, reid escorted troop transports landings @ arawe, new britain, , participated in landings @ cape gloucester, new britain. in following months supported landings @ los negros island in admiralty islands, hollandia jayapura, wakde island, biak, , noemfoor, new guinea. reid supported air strikes against wake island, , in november 1944 did patrol duty off leyte in philippines.


on 11 december 1944, reid operating convoy bound ormoc bay, leyte, resupply land forces. late afternoon, group of japanese planes descended on convoy , penetrated defenses, taking aim @ reid , destroyer. destroyers put anti-aircraft barrage splashed of planes , damaged others, reid hit 5 suicide planes, causing powerful explosions. within minutes, went bottom, , on hundred men perished. reid received 7 battle stars world war ii service.

uss case began active duty in september 1936 , assigned pacific fleet. in april 1940, pearl harbor became home base. following year, participated in fleet exercises midway island, johnston island, palmyra atoll, samoa, , auckland. case berthed @ pearl harbor when japanese struck, sustained no damage. after attack, escorted convoys between west coast , pearl harbor until late may 1942. case went north support pre-invasion bombardment of kiska , patrol duty off adak, alaska. in october, ship escorted convoy pearl harbor , headed states repair, returning pearl harbor in november. in january 1943, sailed espiritu santo training , remained there until september. after overhaul in san francisco, california, case returned pearl harbor in december 1943. proceeded marshall islands, taking part in attacks on wotje atoll , maloelap atoll in late january , eniwetok in february 1944.


in april 1944, case took part in air raids on hollandia, truk (chuuk lagoon), satawan, , ponape island. next assignment task group 58.4, participating in strikes on japanese airfields in bonin islands. during june 1944, case engaged in raids on mariana islands , vulcan islands. following repair work @ eniwetok, ship resumed operations task group, screening air strikes in july , attacks on bonin islands in august , september. took part in bombardment of marcus island before joining task group 38.1 strikes on luzon. while screening cruisers bound saipan, case rammed , sank japanese midget submarine. undamaged, sailed saipan offshore patrol duty until december 1944. afterward, case became involved in raid on iwo jima airfields , helped sink 2 japanese ships. following repairs @ saipan, patrolled between there , iwo jima until end of war. left iwo jima norfolk, virginia, decommissioned in december 1945 , sold in december 1947. case received 7 battle stars world war ii service.


conyngham

uss conyngham made maiden voyage northern europe in 1937, shortly after being commissioned. following overhaul in boston, sailed san diego, california. october 1937 until april 1940, conyngham operated along west coast, hawaiian islands , caribbean, made way pearl harbor. in march 1941, conyngham left pearl harbor on goodwill tour samoa, sydney , brisbane in australia, , suva in fiji, returning in april 1941. undamaged japanese attack on pearl harbor, put sea on patrol duty continued through december. after brief overhaul @ mare island naval shipyard, conyngham performed escort duty between west coast , new hebrides. escort assignment interrupted screen carriers in battle of midway island in june 1942.


during october 1942, conyngham participated in battle of santa cruz islands , supported attack @ matanikau river, guadalcanal. in june 1943 joined amphibious force later carried out landings @ lae , finschhafen, new guinea. in december, took part in landings @ arawe , cape gloucester, new britain. next month, conyngham participated in landing @ saidor, new guinea, , sailed san francisco overhaul. returning duty in may 1944, screened battleships in mariana islands , remained there until august. conyngham joined convoy screening ships philippines islands, arriving @ leyte gulf in november 1944. there, floatplane (a type of seaplane) strafed her, wounding 17 men yet causing slight damage ship. december, had covered landings @ ormoc bay , helped reinforcements. conygnham left philippines late in december manus island, new guinea, replenish supplies. later on, helped screen convoy leyte landings @ lingayen gulf. ship participated in bombardments @ lingayen gulf , remained on patrol there after landings in january 1945. conygham sailed subic bay overhaul in late july 1945, , remained there until end of war. decommissioned in december 1946, conyngham used in atomic weapons test @ bikini in 1946, , scuttled in july 1948. received 14 battle stars world war ii service.


cassin

uss cassin began naval service in august 1936, alterations kept sea duty until march 1937. next year, joined forces @ pearl harbor annual fleet exercises. in april 1940, cassin assigned hawaiian unit. when japanese attacked pearl harbor, cassin in dry-dock battleship pennsylvania , destroyer downes. both destroyers @ southern end of dock when incendiary bomb struck downes, starting unstoppable fires on both destroyers. cassin slipped off blocks , rolled on onto burning downes. salvaged , towed mare island navy yard , decommissioned.


cassin rebuilt , commissioned again in february 1944. reported pearl harbor in april , pulled escort duty until august. in october, ship took part in shelling of marcus island destroy enemy installations. after participating in bombardment of iwo jima in november 1944 , january 1945, escorted ammunition ship newly invaded iwo jima. there, cassin did radar picket , air-sea rescue duty.


with war over, took part in guarding air evacuation of released prisoners of war japan. in november 1945, ship deployed norfolk, virginia, , decommissioned there in december 1945. sold scrap in november 1947. cassin received 6 battle stars world war ii service.

uss shaw crossed atlantic on shakedown cruise in april 1937, , returned philadelphia navy yard in june. there, began year of yard work before completing acceptance trials. remainder of year, ship conducted training exercises in atlantic. sailing west coast, @ mare island navy yard january april 1939. april 1940, shaw moved on hawaiian waters, west coast in november overhaul. returned hawaii in february 1941, , later entered pearl harbor navy yard repairs. shaw still in dry dock when japanese attacked, of ship s crew ashore. hit 3 bombs , severely damaged when forward magazine exploded. temporary repairs made @ pearl harbor, , in february 1942 ship sailed west coast complete them.


with repairs completed, shaw returned pearl harbor in august 1942. assigned task force 61, , took part in battle of santa cruz islands in mid-october. reassigned unit of 7th amphibious force, shaw escorted reinforcements lae , finschhafen, new guinea, remainder of october , part of november. in late december, escorted units engaged in assault on cape gloucester, new britain, , sustained casualties , damage. thirty-six men injured; 3 later died of wounds. temporary repairs made @ milne bay, new guinea, , permanent repairs completed @ san francisco in may 1944. shaw returned pearl harbor.


with task force 52, participated in offensive gain possession of japanese-held mariana islands. in january 1945, san fabian attack force, shaw saw action @ manila bay in philippine islands. returned united states in april, stopping first @ san francisco repairs, routed new york via philadelphia deactivation. ship decommissioned in october 1945 , sold scrap in july 1946. shaw received 11 battle stars world war ii service.


tucker

uss tucker commissioned in july 1936. after shakedown cruise, joined destroyer forces attached battle fleet based in san diego, california. in february 1939 ship took part in naval exercise in caribbean, observed president franklin d. roosevelt cruiser houston. after exercises in hawaiian waters in 1940, tucker operated between west coast , hawaii until end of year. february 1941, in pearl harbor. tucker went on goodwill tour included auckland, during march, before returning pearl harbor. there, participated in exercises @ sea before sailing on san diego. november 1941, tucker once again in pearl harbor. when japanese attacked, ship berthed @ east loch undergoing tender overhaul. undamaged, , returned fire on japanese forces.


after hostilities, tucker patrolled off pearl harbor, spent next 5 months escorting convoys between west coast , hawaii. later escorted tender wright tutuila in american samoa, suva in fiji islands, , nouméa in new caledonia. ship escorted wright suva, arriving there in june 1942. suva, escorted cargo ship nira luckenbach espiritu santo, new hebrides, in august. ship entered harbor western entrance , struck @ least 1 mine. crew abandoned ship , rescued nearby vessels. efforts save in vain; jack-knifed , went bottom. tucker had steamed minefield placed forces, never informed of existence. 3 men killed , 3 more listed missing. removed navy list in december 1944. tucker received 1 battle star world war ii service.

uss downes entered service in january 1937. following november, sailed norfolk, virginia, san diego, california. while based there, downes participated in exercises along west coast, in caribbean , in hawaiian waters until april 1940. pearl harbor became homeport. in 1941, downes joined cruise samoa, fiji islands, , australia, visited west coast later in year. when japanese attacked pearl harbor, downes in dry-dock battleship pennsylvania , destroyer cassin. both destroyers @ southern end of dock when incendiary bomb struck downes, setting unstoppable fires on both ships. cassin slipped blocks , rolled on onto burning downes, , downes later decommissioned.

uss cushing reported pacific fleet in august 1936, after navy service began. joined unsuccessful search missing earhart during month of july 1937. moved on san diego training exercises, continuing operate along west coast next several years. cushing under overhaul @ mare island navy yard when japanese struck pearl harbor. following attack, did convoy duty between west coast , pearl harbor, , later operated off midway island on anti-submarine patrol. in august 1942, cushing sailed pearl harbor training exercises , later joined operations around guadalcanal.


with task force 61, cushing took part in bitterly contested battle of santa cruz in october 1942. outnumbered, force stalled japanese advance toward guadalcanal. @ battle of guadalcanal, cushing perhaps first ship strike enemy on november day in 1942. in fighting followed, sustained several hits amidships , began lose power, able fire 6 torpedoes local control @ japanese battleship hiei. in book, destroyer operations in world war ii (1953), theodore roscoe said, “ 3 of “fish” seemed hit bulls-eye; if did, tack-hammer thumps. may have exploded prematurely. hiei s lookouts must have seen them coming, big ship swung bow left , lumbered westward, disappearing smoke-haze.” time, cushing dead in water, easy target repeated enemy shelling. results disastrous , order given abandon ship. 6 officers , 53 men lost. of survivors rescued, 56 had been wounded , ten of them suffered fatal injuries. abandoned ship remained afloat until magazines blew up. cushing received 3 battle stars world war ii service.


perkins

uss perkins commissioned in september 1936 , san diego, california, became homeport. operated in eastern pacific prior world war ii, , @ mare island navy yard when japanese struck pearl harbor. in mid-december, escorted convoy pearl harbor, returned mare island new radar gear, , sailed pearl harbor latter part of january 1942. following month, perkins departed pearl harbor , joined australian, new zealand, , other ships in anzac squadron, charged protecting eastern approaches australia , new zealand. continued operations anzac until april. in may 1942, perkins participated in battle of coral sea. after that, propeller problems took new zealand , pearl harbor, repairs completed. while @ pearl harbor, additional radar gear , 40 mm guns installed.


by november 1942 perkins task force 67, led rear admiral carleton h. wright. in nighttime battle of tassafaronga, force intercepted japanese stop them supplying guadalcanal. undamaged in encounter, perkins headed tulagi bombarded guadalcanal coast , served on escort assignments until january 1943. joined task force 76, amphibious group, in march. in september 1943, perkins bombarded lae, new guinea, , supported landings there. took part in successful landings @ finschhafen, new guinea. late in november, ship bound milne bay buna, steaming independently, when duntroon, australian troopship, accidentally collided her. perkins broke in 2 , sank; 9 of crew went down her. perkins received 4 battle stars world war ii service.

uss smith began naval service in september 1936, , operated along west coast of united states next 5 years. start of world war ii until april 1942, based in san francisco, california, attached destroyer squadron. in june, smith in pearl harbor, engaged in training exercises, escorted convoy san francisco. after overhaul , sea trials in bay area, smith returned pearl harbor in august. october part of task force 61, participating in battle of santa cruz. in course of battle, japanese torpedo plane crashed her; explosion ignited forward part of ship. crew extinguished fires, , smith able retain position in screen. when air cleared, 28 dead , 23 wounded. patched enough in new caledonia make way pearl harbor, under overhaul until february 1943. next few months, smith performed anti-submarine patrols, did convoy duty, , participated in navy exercises. in september , october, part of amphibious landings @ lae , finschhafen, new guinea. in late december 1943 smith attached task force 76, , took part in landing 1st marine division @ cape gloucester, new britain.


in january 1944, smith participated in amphibious landing near saidor, new guinea, led barbey. in february, bombarded designated targets in preparation landing @ los negros in admiralty islands. middle of march, smith sailed west coast overhaul. completed in june, returned pearl harbor training exercises , gunnery practice. attached 7th fleet in october, smith sailed leyte gulf in philippine islands. there, positioned northeast of ponson island fighter director ship landing @ ormoc bay in december 1944. during january 1945, smith supported landings in lingayen gulf, philippine islands. in late june, bombarded balikpapan, borneo, in preparation landing australian force. smith departed philippines on 15 august 1945 buckner bay, remaining there until steaming nagasaki harbor, kyushu, japan, on 15 september, arriving there 37 days after nuclear bombing of nagasaki on 9 august 1945 forces. there ship boarded 80 military ex-prisoners of war, taking them okinawa transfer united states. on 21 september smith returned nagasaki , picked 90 allied prisoners of war, taking them bickner bay. arrived in sasebo, nagasaki, on 28 september , departed 2 days later san diego via pearl harbor. docking @ san diego on 19 november, remained there until ordered pearl harbor on 28 december, arriving there on 3 january 1946 , assumed inactive status. ship decommissioned on 28 june 1946 , struck navy list on 25 february 1947. smith received 6 battle stars world war ii service.

uss preston in service october 1936 until november 1942. following shakedown, served briefly under chief of naval operations, joined fleet. preston did peacetime training exercises month of december 1941, , performed patrol , escort duties along west coast until june 1942. after that, screened carrier saratoga hawaii, followed 4 months of patrol , escort work in hawaiian waters.


in october became part of task force 61 , participated in battle of santa cruz. in mid-november 1942, preston sailed western end of guadalcanal intercept run japanese bombard henderson field. in ensuing skirmish, preston hit salvo japanese cruiser put both fire rooms out of commission , toppled aft stack. fires made easy target; spread, order given abandon ship. ship rolled onto side , sank, taking 116 of crew her. preston received 2 battle stars world war ii service.

uss dunlap became part of navy in june 1937. year later, served escort @ philadelphia steamer ss kungsholm, carried gustaf adolf, crown prince of sweden. april 1940, pearl harbor dunlap s homeport. when japanese attacked, dunlap @ sea bound pearl harbor; entered port following day. in january, sortied air strikes on marshall islands, , in february took part in raid on wake island. afterward, dunlap patrolled hawaiian waters, escorted convoys between various ports on west coast, , returned pearl harbor in october 1942. in december, destroyer moved on noumea, new caledonia, , operated there until july 1943. dunlap saw action @ vella gulf in solomon islands in nighttime torpedo clash. in united states destroyer operations in world war ii (1953), theodore roscoe wrote: in battle of vella gulf, engagement called, enemy had not laid hand on american ships.


after overhaul in san diego, dunlap performed patrol duty out of adak, alaska, in november , december 1943 , sailed pearl harbor. january until march 1944, screened carriers in strikes on marshall islands 5th fleet. after that, dunlap took part in strikes on soerabaja area of java in may , returned pearl harbor in june. in july, sailed san francisco join screen heavy cruiser baltimore, carried roosevelt conferences , inspections top pacific commanders of pearl harbor , alaskan bases. in september 1944, dunlap participated in shelling of wake island. in october 1944, lent hand in bombardment of marcus island. january 1945, ship involved in shelling of iwo jima, haha-jima, , chichi-jima. on 3 september 1945, commodore john h. magruder accepted surrender of bonin islands lt. general yoshio tachibana on board destroyer. dunlap sailed norfolk, virginia, in november 1945, decommissioned in december 1945 , sold in december 1947. received 6 battle stars world war ii service.

for first 9 months of 1943, fanning deployed against japanese on guadalcanal, supported occupation force on russell islands, participated in patrol duty, , assisted in protection of troops occupying munda, solomon islands. in september, had overhaul on west coast, finished year operating off aleutian islands. january 1944, fanning operating task group 58.4 in marshall islands. in march reported eastern fleet (british units, reinforced australian, dutch , french warships), participating in strikes against sabang, indonesia, next month. detached eastern fleet in may, fanning sailed west coast. in july left san diego, escorting heavy cruiser baltimore alaska roosevelt on board. next assignment task group 30.2, shelling marcus island in october 1944 create diversion , destroy enemy installations. during january 1945, fanning took part in shelling of iwo jima, haha-jima, , chichi-jima. remainder of war, occupied patrol , escort activities. in september 1945, sailed united states, , decommissioned @ norfolk, virginia, in december 1945; sold scrap in 1948. fanning received 4 battle stars world war ii service.
