biography
early life

he born in thundersley in essex historical draughtsman , painter alan sorrell (1904–1974) , watercolorist elizabeth sorrell.


career

he trained @ walthamstow college of art (1965–1966) , @ kingston college of art (1966–1969). went on attend royal academy schools (1969–1972) student of peter greenham, roderic barrett, edward , richard bawden , fred heyworth. awarded ra schools silver , bronze medals.


in 1975 elected royal watercolour society, followed in 1988 royal society of british artists , new english art club in 1995.


in 2001 richard sorrell presented picture of centenary parade hm queen elizabeth queen mother.


he vice-president of royal watercolour society 2002 until 2005, president 2006 until 2009.


he governor of mall galleries (2000–2006).


work

he has known aerial views. these pictures based on map or plan, put perspective, , elevations of buildings drawn on perspective plan. heights of trees , rise , fall of land estimated , added. pictures required great deal of research – instance, view of norwich in time of richard result of consultation archaeologists (now vanished) churches, layout of streets , on. picture hangs in norwich city hall. view of channel tunnel workings @ shakespeare cliff near dover commissioned v&a museum during time of construction of tunnel , in v&a collection.


since 1990s has concentrated on invented figurative pictures . in subjective painting, 1 approaches quite different point of view. painting things rather light, situations. building towards scene rather depiction of it. there no clear connection between 2 kinds of painting. example, not possible take drawing life , work invented composition – or rather possible, resulting painting dull – less successful if had been painted directly life , less inventive if had been evolved paint marks. subjective view of artist?
