the nationalists arrested in washington, d.c. next morning in puerto rico, insular police raided home of pedro albizu campos, president of nationalist party, guns , tear gas. under command of chief of police of puerto rico, salvador t. roig, fired campos home roof of pentecostal church , boarding house faced home. arrested campos , took him jail. unconscious , half-asphyxiated when taken house.
police chief roig later said order arrest albizu campos did not make sense. albizu campos s phones tapped, mail being intercepted, , albizu under 24-hour surveillance fbi, cia , insular police. fbi reports on albizu campos , puerto rican nationalist party exceeded on 1 million pages in length. found no evidence albizu directly connected attack on u.s. congress.
the governor of puerto rico, luis muñoz marín, revoked albizu s pardon, , had political leader returned la princesa prison, had been released 6 months before. accused of sedition, violation of puerto rico law 53 of 1948 (otherwise known gag law ) , attempted violent overthrow of u.s. government.
two years later, on march 25, 1956, albizu campos suffered embolism , stroke while in prison, leaving him semi-paralyzed , mute. not released u.s. federal custody 9 years, shortly before death, occurred on april 21, 1965.
