most of terra lliure s original members converged group around 1980, arriving other armed organizations such popular catalan army (epoca), catalan liberation front (fac) or political organizations such socialist party of national liberation (psan) , catalan countries independentists. in 1979, terra lliure started armed activities , 2 of members died year, 1 in shootout civil guard members , 1 blew himself.

in may 1981, terra lliure kidnapped journalist federico jiménez losantos, shot him in leg , set him free. targeted due signing , promoting manifesto commenting on catalan nationalist menace spanish language in catalonia. in june, group published first statement, called free land calling, in mass meeting @ camp nou stadium.

in 1982, terra lliure held first assembly, while continued armed campaign against spanish , french interests, bank offices , other administrations. second assembly held in 1984 , group started publishing official statements , claimed actions carried out through alerta magazine. in 1985 , 1985, 2 more members died while carrying explosive devices.

between 1984 , 1989 of terra lliure s leaders arrested, nevertheless group maintained structure , capacities , parallel political movement developing, solidarity committee catalan patriots (cspc) , movement defense of land (mdt). in 1987, group committed killing, bomb attack in les borges blanques, lleida. terra lliure admitted killing error. group committed several attacks, against american interests, catalan red liberation army. in 1988, terra lliure held third assembly , developed 3 documents describe theoretical framework , analyze social reality of catalan national liberation movement.
