the ruins consist of southern stone façade—intricately carved between 1620 , 1627 japanese christians in exile homeland , local craftsmen under direction of italian jesuit carlo spinola—and crypts of jesuits established , maintained church. façade sits on small hill, 68 stone steps leading it. carvings include jesuit images oriental themes, such blessed virgin mary stepping on seven-headed hydra, described in chinese characters holy mother tramples heads of dragon . few of other carvings of founders of jesuit order, conquest of death jesus, , @ top, dove wings outstretched.
